Ray Price Knew He Was Running Out of Time. He Called Fred Foster and Said, “I Think I Have One Album Left in Me.” He Was Right.

In 2012, Ray Price was living with the hard truth that his time was shrinking. The country music legend had been fighting pancreatic cancer, and the illness was already changing the pace of his life. Still, when he picked up the phone and called his longtime friend and producer Fred Foster, he did not sound finished. He sounded determined.

According to accounts of the call, Ray Price told Fred Foster, “I think I have one album left in me.” It was a simple sentence, but it carried the weight of a man who understood exactly what he could still give. He wanted Fred Foster to help him make it.

A Final Record Made with Purpose

Ray Price did not treat the project like a farewell speech. He kept working. Even as his health declined, he returned to the studio and kept selecting songs that meant something to him. Many of the tracks leaned toward love ballads, the kind of material that had long fit his voice and his style. Some of the choices reflected the life he had built with his wife, Janie, whom he married in 1970 and remained with until his death.

That detail matters because the album was not just about legacy. It was about feeling. Ray Price was not trying to chase a trend or sound younger than he was. He was doing what he had always done best: singing with warmth, patience, and emotional honesty.

Ray Price Kept Going Even When the Odds Changed

By October 2013, Ray Price had finished his studio work. He would not live long enough to see the album reach listeners. Less than two months later, on December 16, 2013, he died at his home in Mount Pleasant, Texas, at the age of 87.

His death closed a remarkable chapter in country music, but the story did not end there. Ray Price had already left behind something lasting: a final set of recordings that felt calm, reflective, and deeply human.

He had one album left in him — and he used it to leave behind the kind of songs he loved most.

The Album Arrived After He Was Gone

On April 15, 2014, Beauty Is… The Final Sessions was released. The album included duets with Vince Gill and Martina McBride, adding another layer of tenderness to a project that already felt intimate and personal. By then, the music served as both a tribute and a final statement.

Ray Price had spent a lifetime shaping country music with his smooth phrasing and unmistakable voice. This last album did not rewrite his story. It completed it. He knew he was running out of time, but he also knew he still had something to say.

And in the end, Ray Price was right.
