Some nights at the Grand Ole Opry are remembered for the big voices and bright lights. Other nights are remembered for something smaller, quieter, and somehow even more powerful. For Ashley McBryde, one of those moments came when she looked out into the crowd and saw a young fan singing every word.

The girl was Sawyer June Dinwiddie, who was ten and a half at the time. Her parents had bought tickets so she could see her favorite singer on February 21, and the whole evening felt special from the start. But the real story began afterward, when the family went backstage and crossed paths with Ashley McBryde in the hall.

The Dinwiddie family brought pecans from their farm, a simple gift that said plenty. Then Sawyer’s mother, Kit, mentioned something that made the moment even more personal: her daughter knew every word of Bible and a .44. Ashley McBryde did not brush that off. Instead, she got out her guitar, sat down on the hallway floor, and made space for a memory that felt bigger than the building around them.

Sawyer sat facing Ashley McBryde and sang. Kit later said,

When they sat down in the floor, the whole room went silent.

It was the kind of scene that feels almost too tender to be real: a star and a child, meeting each other in the middle of music, with no rush and no performance except honesty.

Before they parted, Ashley McBryde told Sawyer June that Sawyer June was a star’s name. It was a small line, but one that landed with meaning. Ashley McBryde also told Sawyer she meant to be in the crowd the night Sawyer walked across the Opry stage. For a child who had come just to see a favorite artist, that kind of encouragement can change the way a dream feels.

Five months later, the story came full circle on WSM Radio. Sawyer was live on the air when Ashley McBryde called in and reminded her of that promise. Ashley McBryde then invited Sawyer to stand in the circle and make her Opry debut. Sawyer said it was the biggest honor of her life, and she called Ashley McBryde the best friend she had ever had.

No date has been announced yet, and Sawyer is now eleven. But the wait does not dim the moment. In country music, the most lasting stories are often the ones built on heart, timing, and a little bit of faith. On that day, Ashley McBryde gave Sawyer June Dinwiddie more than a promise. Instead of flowers, the family asked that people give to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the program that has mailed free books to small children since 1995, when it began right there in Sevier County. A man almost nothing was ever written about will now be remembered by strangers putting books into the hands of children in the county where he was born.

HIS FIRST GUITAR WAS A SARDINE CAN, A LENGTH OF WIRE, AND SCRAPS OF WOOD.Before anyone knew the name Freddy Fender, he was Baldemar Huerta, born in San Benito, Texas, to a family that went wherever the harvest went. They picked beets in Michigan and cucumbers in Indiana, tomatoes and hay in Ohio, cotton in Arkansas, onions in New Mexico, then turned back toward Texas hoping the money would last until Christmas. He usually got home two months after school started.What stayed with him was the sound. He worked beside Black field hands who sang blues and gospel while they worked, and his family later wrote that it reached the core of him. Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb came off the truck radio, and boleros and rancheras came from home and from the stations across the river. He was assembling a voice years before he had any use for one.By 1974 he was still only a part-time musician when a producer asked him to sing over an instrumental track, and he put a full verse and chorus of it in Spanish. “The recording only took a few minutes,” he said later, figuring that was the end of it. “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” went No. 1 on the country chart in March 1975 and No. 1 on the pop chart that May. In 2025 the Library of Congress placed that recording in the National Recording Registry — kept for good, beet fields and cotton rows and all.
