50 FLAGS. 50 STATES. ONE VOICE ON THE NATIONAL MALL. Last night on the National Mall, flags from all 50 states were carried onstage one by one. Then Alexis Wilkins stepped to the microphone. Behind her — the United States Marine Band. The Great American State Fair had officially begun. A 16-day celebration for America’s 250th birthday, with 150 exhibits stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument and a 110-foot Ferris wheel glowing against the D.C. skyline. But here’s the thing most people didn’t know yet — the woman singing the anthem that night wasn’t some arena headliner. She’s an Arkansas-raised, Nashville-based country artist who’s opened for Chris Young and Lee Greenwood, and she took this stage without a single dollar in payment. She called it a “great honor.” Military flyovers shook the sky above her. The fair runs through July 10.
