George Strait Honored at the 48th Kennedy Center Honors: A True Country Legend
They don’t miss — and this year’s Kennedy Center Honors proved it once again.
Held in Washington, D.C., the annual celebration shined the spotlight on some of the most iconic figures in entertainment, including George Strait, KISS, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Crawford, and Sylvester Stallone. It was a powerful night of tribute performances and heartfelt moments, especially for fans of country music.
For those unfamiliar, the Kennedy Center serves as both a national cultural institution and a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Over the decades, it has honored the very best in American music and the performing arts — from Dolly Parton to Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Loretta Lynn.
Country’s Best Show Up for the King
This year, the King of Country, George Strait, received one of the night’s biggest honors — and his fellow artists did not disappoint. Miranda Lambert gave a stirring performance of “Run,” while Brooks & Dunn delivered a powerhouse rendition of Strait’s signature hit, “Amarillo by Morning.”
Originally released in 1982 on his album Strait from the Heart, the song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Ironically, despite its iconic status, it never reached No. 1 — yet it remains arguably Strait’s most beloved track.
Strait himself once called it, “My most favorite song I’ve ever recorded… people always requested it. This one’s called ‘Amarillo By Morning.’ I love singing it.”
A Tribute Worthy of a Legend
Watching Ronnie Dunn take on those legendary vocals was something special. Few can honor George Strait with the kind of authenticity and ease that Brooks & Dunn and Lambert delivered — their performances were filled with reverence and unmatched professionalism.
With such a standout tribute, don’t be surprised if Brooks & Dunn themselves are tapped for Kennedy Center honors in the near future.
The full event aired on CBS and is available for streaming on Paramount+. If the tribute to Strait is any indication, this year’s Kennedy Center Honors are not to be missed.
Here’s to George Strait — the voice, the legacy, the King of Country.
